Photos: March 5th at The Watusi

Thanks again to the amazing Amanda Ratcliffe for taking these pictures. I was only gonna put a couple on here, but decided to be greedy. :P You can check out more of her work here and here.
And if you're in Auckland this Thursday be sure to head down to Galatos for Shooting Spree and Duke heart Maddie. I'd love to be there myself. :(

Wendy's Tale of Woe

So last night Rutger was sick and I ended up having to play solo, kinda scary but I managed to put together a reasonable set at the last minute. Soundcheck went really well, sounded good, felt good, I thought things would be alright...

I ended up starting later than I expected, and subsequently drank more than I really should of before hitting the stage. It's a fine line between bolstering confidence and destroying coherence.

I started with a new song, Mosaic, which wasn't so bad, but my dancing was pretty destructive; I knocked over about 70% of the stuff on stage. :/ Next I attempted to play an old song named Poppy, but I couldn't hear the backing track, and the levels of my guitar were bad. Last time we played at the Watusi we said we wouldn't play there again, not because there's anything wrong with the bar, but the PA is totally incompatible with our style of music. I gave up after a couple of false starts.

For the rest of the set I had some help from Ron of Crash Scan, who helped with background textures. The next track was another kinda-old, kinda-new song called Traumerei, but half way through the effects pedals that both Ron and I were using stopped working. We had to take a recess while we tried to sort things out.

I managed to get the pedals working again, but my keyboard died and would do nothing but emit a constant drone. We came back with a song named Trailer, which went pretty well although I caught a flap of skin from my finger on a guitar string and proceeded to bleed everywhere. Sadly I think that was the highlight of the night.

I then played a song called Outside This Silence which went pretty well, though by this point I'd emptied the venue of all but my staunchest supporters. I had been planning on covering Bowie's Drive-In Saturday, but the way things were going I didn't want to risk another train wreck. I had to skip playing Alicia as well, since I misplaced my capo with my earlier reign of chaos.

I tried to close with Nabokov, which had gone so well in soundcheck, but again I couldn't hear the backing properly and just gave up. My friend Amanda managed to get some pretty awesome photos though so the night wasn't a total waste, and hopefully I'll be able to put a few up for you to see soon.

Photoshoot Preview

We've been sitting on these for a wee while, and while they're not the finished product they definitely deserve to be seen. We had the best day with our awesome photographer Lachlan Holland and wonderfully done make-up by Bex Thomas.
